When we were first told to assemble in the hall, I knew that today's assembly will be extraordinary as we only assemble in the hall on Monday's for the singing of the National Anthem and on Fridays for prize presentations for any medals won throughout the week. What stunned me again was two chairs placed exactly in the middle of the hall.
The discipli
ne master, Mr Tan was exceptionally frustrated, shouting at everyone who he caught with unacceptable attire or was strolling into the hall instantaneously at the sight of them. The principal, Leong, was furious as he stormed into the hall with his arms akimbo and furrowed eyebrows that hinted anger. The teachers had mixed emotions, some showing fear, their faces a frozen in a glassy stare of horror.Almost all the students knew that something was wrong.
Not wanting any trouble, all the students read their books like angels sent from heaven, maintaining deadly silence throughout the whole five minutes of silent reading unlike other days in which many people will be busy chatting with their friends.

After singing the national anthem and reciting the pledge, all the students sat down and maintained the solemn mood. Mr Leong got onto the stage with bloodshot eyes, his face lik
e a volcano filled with burning lava, along with Mr Tan beside him with clenched fists and a senior wearing long dirty pants, ankle socks, with untucked shirt and unacceptably long hair.
The second we sat down, Mr Leong skipped the formalities of greeting us and talked about honesty, "How many times must I say the four things that Victorians never commit. DON'T BULLY, DON'T CHEAT, DON'T LIE, DON'T STEAL. Despite the number of times the teachers and I have reminded you not to disobey us, none of you listen. This student, Jerry Lim of class 4F has broken countless school rules by stealing, cheating during exams and beating up other students! Although he was given many chances he did not improve in spite of constantly promising to do so! I will therefore punish him by twenty strokes of the cane, and suspension from school until further notification! If he does not change after he returns I will expel him. Everytime I cane a Victorian I will always tell myself that this will be my last. I hate caning students but will if forced to."

In a heartbeat, he took the cane from a table backstage while the Mr Tan commanded him to kneel down with his face facing the students with both elbows on the chair. Then, Mr Leong using all his strength stormed up by his anger, used the cane and hit him time after time again, each time with a face filled with pain, anguish, suffering and regret.

However, after Jerry got up from the caning, he pointed the middle finger to Mr Leong and sweared at him. Leaving the whole school dumbfounded with dropped jaws.
What surprised me today was how rebellious that student was. When I first entered Victoria School, I knew that I was below average and believed that I was possibly one of the worst in the school. What stunned me was why there were people constantly getting into detention and into trouble. Why is that so? Almost everyday, I can find people doing detention for not doing homework, disrupting the class, playing truant, fighting and rude to the staff in the school.
Why is that so that people have this impression in their minds that Victoria School is a great education institution? Why is it so that many parents are so enthusiastic to get their sons into this school in spite of the number of Victorians getting into trouble daily? I simply cannot reconcile.
I hope that Victoria School will improve and be the perfect school that the public believe in to educate future leaders of Singapore.
